Expanding

Women Get Expanding Role In Global BPO

In today’s economy of doing more with less, companies of all size must outsource services to be more competitive and have more opportunities to innovate, which in turn creates more jobs in the U.S.

Outsourcing now serves a dual purpose: it’s economical, but is also a strategic tool that will power the twenty-first century global economy. Industry revenue has risen steadily year-over-year from $45 billion in 2000 to just under $100 billion in 2012.

And the global Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) industry is projected to reach $220 billion by 2020 – at a growth rate of an outstanding 37%, due in large part to the U.S economy’s outsourcing boom. Service jobs increased to 107 million – up from 47 million, with women improving their share every year.

And it’s not only in the U.S. where women are entering – and managing – key aspects of their countries’ also expanding BPO industry.

In India, 33% of employees joining the $143 billion IT-BPO industry are women. Per findings released at the Nasscom Diversity and Inclusion Summit 2016 sponsored by IT association Nasscom, the industry — which employs 3.7 million people — has seen a major rise in the number of women joining the sector.

With one-third of the IT-BPO workforce – about 1.23 million – now women, it is important to note that they are no longer just fulfilling support roles such as HR. While the number of women in support roles has gone down from 37% in 2014 to 34%, the number of women in management roles has increased proportionately.

Riyadh, Saudi Arabia — a city not known for its IT services industry, is home to a BPO outfit run by Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), India’s largest IT services company. Most important – and very interesting – each one of the 1,000-plus employees are women.

The center is proof of TCS’s intent and ability to partner in the kingdom’s transformation journey by establishing a new industry in the country and by tapping into the talent pool of qualified Saudi women. Overall, the number of female workers has surged by 48% since 2010, per a recent Bloomberg report.

Develop Your Startup Idea

When, while the lovely valley teems with vapor around me, and the meridian sun strikes the upper surface of the impenetrable foliage of my trees, and but a few stray gleams steal into the inner sanctuary, I throw myself down among the tall grass by the trickling stream; and, as I lie close to the earth, a thousand unknown plants are noticed by me: when I hear the buzz of the little world among the stalks, and grow familiar with the countless indescribable forms of the insects and flies, then I feel the presence of the Almighty, who formed us in his own image, and the breath of that universal love which bears and sustains us, as it floats around us in an eternity of bliss; and then, my friend, when darkness overspreads my eyes, and heaven and earth seem to dwell in my soul and absorb its power, like the form of a beloved mistress, then I often think with longing, Oh, would I could describe these conceptions, could impress upon paper all that is living so full and warm within me, that it might be the mirror of my soul, as my soul is the mirror of the infinite God!

O my friend — but it is too much for my strength — I sink under the weight of the splendor of these visions! A wonderful serenity has taken possession of my entire soul, like these sweet mornings of spring which I enjoy with my whole heart. I am alone, and feel the charm of existence in this spot, which was created for the bliss of souls like mine.

I am so happy, my dear friend, so absorbed in the exquisite sense of mere tranquil existence, that I neglect my talents. I should be incapable of drawing a single stroke at the present moment; and yet I feel that I never was a greater artist than now.

chargeback

DR Republic: Charge-back Control Is Key To Direct Marketing Success

For direct marketers, especially in rapidly growing markets such as the U.S. and Europe, the ability to reduce and manage chargebacks will be essential to prosperity—and possibly even survival.

According to a report focusing on the growth of eCommerce in the U.S., merchants can expect a 56% increase in online sales over the next five years due to more consumers utilizing digital payments on mobile phones and tablets. The projected increase will push eCommerce sales to $523 billion, up from $335 billion in 2015. The report, from Forrester, expects an additional 26 million shoppers to participate in digital payments and eCommerce sales in the U.S. by 2020.1

In Europe, there are an estimated 296 million online shoppers, spending and estimated 1,540 euros ($1,720.26), according to eCommerce Europe. While this year, the European eCommerce market predicts to finish around $566.2 billion, 2017 and 2018 expect to be around 598 billion euros ($668.3 billion) and 660 billion euros ($737.6 billion) respectively.2

“For direct marketers and consumers both in the American and European markets, this is wonderful news,” said, CEO of DR Republic, a global business process outsourcing (BPO) provider. “The rapid growth in these large markets indicates a global rise in digital payments and eCommerce sales.”

According to the Forrester report, $1 trillion of the total online purchases in the U.S. for 2015 were influenced by mobile devices, and with India’s expected growth, similar numbers can be anticipated for them by 2020.

“However,” cautioned Khan, “participation in such rapidly growing markets involves risks as well as opportunities, and perhaps the most major of those risks is chargebacks.”

Chargebacks, which involve the reversal of an already completed credit card transaction, were originally created to protect consumers against spammers. To a merchant, a chargeback is significantly more detrimental than a simple refund; the merchant must pay higher rates to cover a chargeback (and has a greater reserve held back) than in the case of a refund. Chargebacks can therefore quickly become a true financial burden to the company. Worse, a chargeback rate above a certain level can lead to the termination of the direct marketer’s merchant account, making it impossible for that brand or website to do business at all.

In dealing with chargebacks, per Khan, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. This view is echoed by other direct response industry experts, who agree that the safest approach is to give customers a quick refund, and to avoid creating refund policies that are too protective of the business. (Product costs are minimal compared to the damage even one chargeback can cause.) Beyond that, best practices emphasize clear communication: be sure the customer knows when an order is going to arrive; make it easy to cancel a shipment or make a return; and—a golden rule—never bill the customer’s credit card until the order is ready to ship.3

According to the 2016 Lexus Nexus report, on average, US merchants reported an 8% increase over last year in the cost per dollar of fraud losses, from $2.23 to $2.40. This means that for every dollar of losses, merchants are losing $2.40 based on chargebacks, fees and merchandise replacement.3

“We know both American and European markets,” Khan said, “and we are helping our customers take advantage of the opportunity they represent—safely. We are consistently able to reduce chargebacks for our customers through effective merchant management, continuous testing, data analytics, best practices, and using our subject matter experts to drive customer engagement.”

Digital

As Digital Marketing Looms In Importance, Businesses Seek Outsourced Assistance

Digital marketing has become a key area of both corporate investment and performance expectation. For help in doing what’s necessary today without inflating cost, businesses are increasingly turning to expert outsourced service providers.

 According to marketers surveyed for the Gartner Group’s “CMO Spend Survey 2015-2016,” marketing budgets across the economy increased from 10% to 11% of total revenue in 2015, and two-thirds of those surveyed expected similar growth in 2016. Key areas of focus were social marketing, analytics, customer experience, and digital commerce.1 “What’s happening,” said, CEO of DR Republic, a global business process outsourcing provider, “is a recognition that these four digital activities have become essential to business growth, if not business survival.”

Khan noted that social media—which was given the highest investment priority by respondents to the Gartner survey—has become the chief method of global mass communications. He pointed out that “analytics is the ability to process big data, without which a business is flying blind. The customer experience is now regarded as perhaps the key competitive differentiator. And eCommerce is a rapidly growing revenue component in virtually every sector. As the Gartner report shows, the digital realm represents a way for marketers to leverage their core skills in areas which show demonstrable impact on revenue. Digital is the route to growth.”

To achieve their growth goals without incurring a heavy additional cost burden, many companies are turning to outsourced service suppliers to provide digital resources and expertise. According to the 2015 “Designhill Design & Branding Perception Survey,” outsourcing was one of the biggest growth-stimulating strategies of 2015, especially for small businesses and startups. It has been a proven strategy for many companies in accelerating growth while maintaining a profitable bottom line. The report says, “Soon, [outsourcing] will become a norm rather than an exception.”

Citing a variety of sources, the Designhill report offered statistics which illustrate the current trend towards outsourcing:

  • 53% of marketing executives plan to outsource their marketing (Hubspot);
  • 78% of small businesses believe that hiring freelancers gives them an advantage over their competitors (Elance Survey);
  • Per survey, 90% of businesses cited outsourcing as being crucial to their growth (The Economist).

 The Designhill report noted that small businesses have traditionally outsourced for cost savings, access to talent not locally available, and faster hiring time. A report by The Economist, however, showed that outsourcing is no longer just about cost saving; it’s a strategic tool that may power the 21st-century global economy. According to The Economist, 36% of companies that outsource do so to avail themselves of the services of innovators, and 37% outsource to seek overall growth in their endeavors.2

“To any business owner or manager considering an outsourced business process provider for help in digital marketing,” Khan said, “I would recommend looking into this thoroughly, because it’s really a great idea. First of all, the cost savings are real, and they’re immediate—there are fixed overhead expenses you simply never have to shoulder. Outsourcing can also increase your productivity. As an owner or manager, you have only so much time and attention; by outsourcing, you can shed the parts of your workload on which you don’t need to be focused, and concentrate on your core competence. And it gives you access to expertise you wouldn’t otherwise have. We think of outsourcing as a strategy for smaller businesses, and it is—many of our clients are startup entrepreneurs. However, many of the largest corporations are also outsourcing, and there’s a good reason for that—no matter how big you are, you just can’t employ a staff which is expert in every single thing. That’s where a company such as DR Republic comes in; by working with many clients, we can offer the services of a wide variety of subject matter experts.”

Finally, Khan suggested that digital marketers seeking outsourced assistance follow the golden rule of outsourcing: know your partner. “Ask questions. Ask for metrics. Ask your partner to specify results. At DR Republic, we know that our clients trust us with a vital aspect of their businesses. We specify—and regularly document—exactly how we continue to earn that trust. I wouldn’t be in this business, nor would my staff, if we didn’t know for sure that we’re making a net positive contribution to our clients, the industries in which they work, and the economies served by those industries.”
